📖 IELTS: International English Language Testing System – Band 0 to 9
🎧 IELTS Listening Series: Lesson 1 – Format, Sections & Band 9 Listening Habits
“Listening is not about hearing words — it’s about catching intention before it finishes speaking.”
– Md Chhafrul Alam Khan
💫 1️⃣ Inspiration
Most candidates hear everything but catch little.
Band 9 listeners are silent detectives — they predict, focus, and filter.
This first lesson builds that mental system.
🧭 2️⃣ The IELTS Listening Format
| Section | Context | Speaker Type | Question Count | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Everyday conversation (booking, inquiry, delivery, etc.) | 2 people | 10 Qs | Easiest |
| 2 | Informational monologue (tour, announcement, guide talk) | 1 speaker | 10 Qs | Easy → Moderate |
| 3 | Academic discussion (students + tutor / research talk) | 2–4 speakers | 10 Qs | Moderate → Hard |
| 4 | Academic lecture (monologue) | 1 expert speaker | 10 Qs | Hardest |
🕒 Total Time: ≈ 30 minutes (+ 10 min transfer if paper test)
🎯 Total Questions: 40
⚙️ 3️⃣ Band 9 Listening Habits
| Habit | Description | Practice Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Predict | Glance at question → guess info type (number, name, verb) | Mark before audio starts |
| Follow | Track question numbers mentally | Write keywords lightly in margin |
| Filter | Ignore distractions / rephrasing | Focus on keywords & synonyms |
| Recover | Missed 1 word? Skip and return | Don’t panic; next answer is coming |
| Check | Re-read answers in transfer time | Correct grammar & spelling |
🧱 4️⃣ Scoring & Band Conversion
| Correct Answers (out of 40) | Approx. Band |
|---|---|
| 39–40 | 9.0 (Expert) |
| 37–38 | 8.5 |
| 35–36 | 8.0 |
| 30–34 | 7.0–7.5 |
| 23–29 | 6.0–6.5 |
| 18–22 | 5.5 |
| <18 | Below 5 |
✅ Band 9 aim = ≤ 1 mistake per section
🧩 5️⃣ Common Question Types
1️⃣ Form / Note / Table Completion
2️⃣ Multiple Choice (Single / Multiple answers)
3️⃣ Map / Plan / Diagram Labeling
4️⃣ Matching (people → opinions / places → features)
5️⃣ Sentence Completion
6️⃣ Short Answer Questions
7️⃣ Flow Chart / Summary Completion
Each type demands unique attention patterns → we will study them in future lessons.
🧠 6️⃣ Predictive Listening Exercise
Before audio:
🔹 Look at question 5 → “Customer name ____ ?” → Expect a proper noun.
🔹 Look at question 7 → “Total cost ____ pounds.” → Expect a number + currency.
When you guess right, your brain locks focus = Band 9 reaction speed.
📘 7️⃣ Spelling & Grammar Rules
✅ All answers must fit grammatically.
✅ Check singular / plural endings (“student → students”).
✅ Numbers → write digits (“£30”) unless told to spell.
✅ Names → capitalise first letter.
✅ Extra word = wrong answer (only exact fits accepted).
💡 8️⃣ Accent Awareness
You may hear British, Australian, New Zealand, or North American speakers.
💬 Practice on: BBC Radio 4, ABC Australia, TED Talks, IELTS Liz practice recordings.
🎧 Tip: Listen for numbers (“thirteen” vs “thirty”) and dates (“the thirteenth of May”).
🗂️ 9️⃣ Time Management
| Stage | Time | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Preview | 30 s (before each section) | Underline keywords & guess answers |
| Listen | 6–8 min per section | Write short forms quickly |
| Transfer | 10 min (paper) / none (CBT) | Check spelling & grammar |
💡 In computer tests, edit answers immediately.
🧠 🔟 Common Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Writing before listening completely
❌ Spelling errors (e.g., “adress”)
❌ Not checking grammar fit
❌ Repeating wrong options
❌ Changing answers in panic
📖 11️⃣ Mini Word List
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Inquiry | Question / Request for info | Make an inquiry about tickets. |
| Reservation | Booking ahead | She made a hotel reservation. |
| Appointment | Fixed meeting time | My appointment is at 10 a.m. |
| Duration | Length of time | The course duration is 3 months. |
| Deposit | Advance payment | A deposit of £100 is required. |
❤️ 12️⃣ Motivational Reminder
“Your ears already understand English; your focus just needs training.”
