📖 IELTS: International English Language Testing System – Band 0 to 9
🎧 IELTS Listening Series: Lesson 11 – Accent Masterclass (British, Australian, American, Canadian & Global Speech Recognition)
“To understand every accent is to understand the world through sound.”
– Md Chhafrul Alam Khan
💫 1️⃣ Inspiration
IELTS is an international test — it doesn’t use just one accent.
Each section might feature a different speaker from:
🇬🇧 the UK (British)
🇦🇺 Australia
🇺🇸 the USA
🇨🇦 Canada
🇳🇿 New Zealand
This diversity ensures fairness — but also confuses untrained ears.
After today’s masterclass, no accent will ever surprise you again.
🧭 2️⃣ Accent Overview Table
| Accent | Main Region | Key Sound Features | Common Words / Usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| British (UK) | England, Wales, Scotland | Clear “t” sounds, long vowels, “r” often silent | “flat” (not “apartment”), “holiday” (not “vacation”) |
| Australian (AUS) | Australia | “i” → “oi” (“time” → “toime”), “a” → “ai” (“day” → “dai”) | “mate”, “breaky” (breakfast), “arvo” (afternoon) |
| American (US) | USA | Pronounced “r”, flat “a” sounds, shorter vowels | “elevator”, “trash”, “gas” |
| Canadian (CAN) | Canada | Mix of US + UK features, rising tone at sentence end | “eh?” at end of sentences |
| New Zealand (NZ) | New Zealand | “e” → “i” (“pen” → “pin”), soft speech flow | “heaps” (a lot), “kiwi” (person, fruit, or bird) |
🎯 IELTS uses British and Australian most often — focus your training there.
⚙️ 3️⃣ British Accent (🇬🇧)

“petrol”, “post”, “flat”, “lift”, “car park”, “centre”, “favourite”.
Training Resource:
🎧 BBC Radio 4, Cambridge Listening, British Council Podcasts.
Example Practice:
“I’d like a glass of water, please.”
(British → “wah-tah”, not “wah-der”).
✅ Write: “water” (don’t change spelling).
🧱 4️⃣ Australian Accent (🇦🇺)
Features:
- “a” becomes “ai” → “day” = “dai”, “mate” = “mait”.

🧩 7️⃣ New Zealand Accent (🇳🇿)
