🎧 IELTS Listening Series: Lesson 2 – Form & Note Completion Masterclass (Section 1 Precision Training)

Md Chhafrul Alam Khan

“Listening for IELTS is not passive hearing — it’s active detective work.”

Md Chhafrul Alam Khan

💫 1️⃣ Inspiration

Section 1 is usually a conversation between two people — e.g., booking a hotel, ordering service, registering for a course.
The accent is usually clear British, and the pace moderate — but beware: the test hides traps through rephrasing and distractions.

This lesson teaches you how to predict, decode, and confirm answers perfectly.

🧭 2️⃣ What to Expect

FeatureTypical ContentKey Focus
SettingDaily-life (hotel, transport, event, inquiry)Simple details
Speakers2 (customer + receptionist, etc.)Everyday tone
Question TypeForm, Table, Note, Short AnswerFactual info
Answer Format1–3 words and/or a numberMust fit grammar

🕒 Usually Questions 1–10

⚙️ 3️⃣ Predicting Answers Before Listening

Before audio starts, scan your paper (or screen):

Example:

Name: ____________
Address: ____________ Street
Phone: ____________
Date: ____________
Fee: £ ____________

💡 Predict possible answers:

  • Name → proper noun
  • Address → street or road
  • Phone → number
  • Date → day or month
  • Fee → number with £

This makes your brain expect the shape of the answer before hearing it.

🧱 4️⃣ Common Rephrasing Tricks

Audio SaysQuestion ShowsHidden Logic
“That’s double five, nine two one.”Phone numberDouble = write twice
“It’s in King Street, near the post office.”AddressLocation details
“The total cost is one hundred and twenty pounds.”£____Write “£120”
“You’ll have to pay a deposit of fifty.”FeeAlways write as number unless word required
“She spells it J-A-C-K-S-O-N.”NameWrite carefully — 1 letter wrong = 0 mark

✅ Always note spelling while they spell out letters.

💡 5️⃣ Common Distractors

TrapExampleWhat To Do
Correction“It’s 15 King Street—oh, sorry, 16.”Write final answer (16).
Similar Words“The conference is in July.” (Q says ‘When is registration?’ → answer may be June.)Focus on question intent.
Plural Trap“Room for two people.” (Answer = ‘Double room’ not ‘Rooms’.)Match grammar.
Units Confusion“Costs twenty-five per person.”Write full “£25 per person” if needed.

🧠 6️⃣ How to Catch Spelled Words

🗣️ When speaker says:

“That’s M as in Mary, A, double R, I, O, T, T.”

✅ Write: MARRIOTT

💡 Band 9 listeners recognise patterns:

  • Double letters → “double s”, “double r”, etc.
  • Z (British) pronounced “Zed”
  • W pronounced “Double-U”
  • R is lightly rolled in British accent.

📘 7️⃣ Numbers & Dates Practice

Spoken FormWrite AsNotes
“Oh seven five nine two…”07592…‘Oh’ = 0
“Twenty-three forty-five”2345For 4-digit numbers
“On the fifteenth of March”15 MarchOrdinals → convert
“Two thousand and nine”2009No commas
“Half past seven”7:30Time format accepted

✅ Always use clear digits.

⚙️ 8️⃣ Grammar Fit Check

You must ensure your answer fits grammatically:

Example:

“The customer booked a _____ room.”
If you hear: “He wants a single room.”
✅ Write “single” (not “a single”) because “a” is already given.

💡 If your answer sounds wrong in the sentence, check grammar.

🧩 9️⃣ Realistic Practice Example

Listen (simulation style):

Receptionist: “Good morning, Oxford Student Centre. How can I help you?”
Student: “I’d like to register for a part-time course.”
R: “Sure. Could I take your full name?”
S: “Yes, it’s James Carter, that’s C-A-R-T-E-R.
R: “Thank you. And your contact number?”
S: “It’s 07984 523 611.
R: “The course begins on the 3rd of May, and the total fee is £150.”

✅ Answers:

  1. Name → James Carter
  2. Phone → 07984 523 611
  3. Date → 3 May
  4. Fee → £150

🧠 🔟 Band 9 Tip – Use Symbols While Listening

Instead of full words:

  • “dep” = deposit
  • “ph” = phone
  • “str” = street
  • “£” = pounds
  • “d/o” = date of

After listening, expand neatly during review time.
