📖 IELTS: International English Language Testing System – Band 0 to 9
🎧 IELTS Listening Series: Lesson 3 – Map / Plan / Diagram Labeling Masterclass (Section 2 Spatial Listening & Visualization Skills)
“Band 9 listening isn’t about following words — it’s about seeing the sound.”
– Md Chhafrul Alam Khan
💫 1️⃣ Inspiration
Section 2 tests how well you can visualize movement and location from spoken directions.
You’ll hear a monologue (one speaker) — for example:
- A tour guide describing a museum,
- A manager explaining a building layout,
- A speaker describing a park map or event site.
This task measures your ability to turn language into a mental map — one of the most intelligent listening skills in English.
🧭 2️⃣ What to Expect
| Feature | Example Context | Typical Question Type |
|---|---|---|
| Audio Type | Monologue (tour, guide, description) | 1 speaker only |
| Visual | Map, plan, or simple diagram | Labels A–K, or numbers |
| Question | “Write the correct letter (A–K) next to each place.” | Matching labels |
| Focus | Spatial understanding | Directions, landmarks, positions |
⚙️ 3️⃣ Common Vocabulary for Direction
| Category | Phrases to Recognize | Visual Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Position | in front of, behind, next to, opposite | relative placement |
| Direction | go past, turn left/right, go straight ahead, at the corner of | movement paths |
| Landmarks | near the fountain, beside the café, across from the library | location clues |
| Inside/Outside | entrance, exit, hallway, upstairs, downstairs | internal navigation |
🧠 When you hear these, move your eyes on the map as if walking.
🧱 4️⃣ Band 9 Pre-Listening Strategy
1️⃣ Study the map → Read all given labels A–K.
2️⃣ Notice compass points → N, S, E, W (north, south, east, west).
3️⃣ Locate start point → Usually marked with ✳️ or “You are here”.
4️⃣ Predict route type → Will it move clockwise / anticlockwise / straight path?
5️⃣ Anticipate language → If the route crosses buildings, expect “next to”, “past”, “on your left”.
✅ Your eyes should travel slightly ahead of the voice — listen with your eyes.
💡 5️⃣ Common Distractors
| Trap | Example | Band 9 Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Double Mention | “First we’ll go past the café — but we won’t stop there, we’ll turn left to the library.” | Write library (not café). |
| Visual Confusion | “The car park is opposite the supermarket.” | Opposite = across from, not next to. |
| Synonym Change | “Playground” spoken → “children’s area” on map. | Recognize synonyms. |
| Order Trap | “After that, we’ll visit the gallery before the exit.” | Sequence matters; mark arrows. |
🧩 6️⃣ Example Simulation
Imagine this simplified map:
NORTH
┌───────────────┐
│ Library │
│ ↑ │
│ Café ← Park → Museum
│ ↓ │
│ Entrance │
└───────────────┘
Audio sample:
“When you enter, you’ll see the café directly in front of you.
If you go left from the café, you’ll reach the library.
Turning right instead will take you to the museum.
The park is located behind the café.”
✅ Answers:
- Library → left of café
- Museum → right of café
- Park → behind café
🧠 7️⃣ Core Visualization Technique
- Mark direction words quickly:
- Left (L), Right (R), Ahead (→), Behind (↓).
- Draw tiny arrows on your map as you listen.
- Don’t label immediately — follow until the clue is confirmed.
🎯 Example:
“Go past the gift shop and you’ll see the lecture hall on your right, next to the cafeteria.”
→ Label lecture hall = right side near cafeteria.
📘 8️⃣ Typical Vocabulary List for Section 2
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Opposite | Facing something | The library is opposite the park. |
| Beside | Next to | The shop is beside the café. |
| Across from | On the other side | The post office is across from the bank. |
| At the corner of | On the edge | The bus stop is at the corner of King Street. |
| Adjacent to | Next to / very close | The reception is adjacent to the lobby. |
⚙️ 9️⃣ Grammar & Answer Format
- Usually answers are letters (A–K), not words.
- Sometimes require 1–2 words (e.g., “north entrance”).
- Capital letters are fine for clarity.
- Double-check numbering order (1–10).
🧩 🔟 Common Accent Variations
| Word | British | American | Example in Audio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Left / Right | Same | Same | “Turn right at the roundabout.” |
| Entrance | “en-tr’nce” | “en-trance” | “Use the south entrance.” |
| Car park | British | Parking lot (US) | “You’ll find the car park behind the building.” |
| Lift | British | Elevator (US) | “Take the lift to the first floor.” |
| Ground floor | British | First floor (US) | Context can shift! |
💡 Be ready for both word sets; IELTS uses both interchangeably.
❤️ 11️⃣ Motivational Reminder
“When you see through your ears, no map can confuse you.”
Visualization transforms sound into a mental movie. Practise with travel vlogs or Google Maps directions — listen + watch = Band 9 accuracy.
