FORMAT GUIDE

Why convert JPEG to PNG?

PNG saves the new output without adding further lossy JPEG compression during export, making it handy for repeated graphic editing.

  • Importing a JPEG image into a PNG-only graphics workflow.
  • Saving a photo as PNG before adding annotations or overlays.
  • Creating a widely supported PNG file for a content-management system.

UNDERSTAND YOUR FILES

JPEG vs. PNG: what changes?

Input · JPEG

A widely supported photographic format. JPEG uses lossy compression and cannot represent transparency.

Output · PNG

A losslessly encoded still-image format, useful for graphics, screenshots, text, and transparent backgrounds.

PNG saves the new output without adding further lossy JPEG compression during export, making it handy for repeated graphic editing. Choosing an output format changes how another app reads the file; it does not restore detail missing from your source.

Which settings should you choose?

Start with Original dimensions to retain the decoded pixel size. Select a maximum edge only when you need a smaller output image.

Your files and privacy

Your selected file is converted on your device. You can download the new file while keeping the original unchanged.

Some formats work differently across browsers and devices. Check the converted result before using it for important work. Advertising and other optional website services may have separate privacy practices.

Format compatibility and limitations

Changing JPEG to PNG does not restore detail previously lost to JPEG compression. The resulting PNG can be larger than the original.

Actual output behavior depends on the input file, your browser, device resources and the converter engine. Check important files before sharing or replacing them.

JPG and JPEG are the same image format. This tool accepts .jpg and .jpeg input and uses .jpg for exports.

HELP & ANSWERS

JPEG to PNG questions

Will converting JPEG to PNG make the photo sharper?

No. PNG does not reconstruct detail already removed by JPEG compression.

Does the exported PNG have a transparent background?

No. Converting a JPEG does not create transparency that was not in the source.

Will the PNG be smaller?

Usually not. PNG is lossless and photographic content can take more space.
