FORMAT GUIDE

Why convert TAR.GZ to TAR?

The new archive format can be useful for sharing the same contained files with different applications.

  • Changing an ordinary archive into a more compatible container.
  • Preparing TAR archives for ZIP-based sharing.
  • Packaging a small set of regular files without uploading your files.

UNDERSTAND YOUR FILES

TAR.GZ vs. TAR: what changes?

Input · TAR.GZ

TAR.GZ is a GZIP-compressed TAR file; browser compression API support is required.

Output · TAR

TAR packages filesystem entries. This tool accepts only regular files and safe directory entries.

The new archive format can be useful for sharing the same contained files with different applications. Choosing an output format changes how another app reads the file; it does not restore detail missing from your source.

Check the formatting

Basic paragraphs, text, and common markup can be converted, but complex layouts, scripts, custom Markdown extensions and styling may not round-trip.

Your files and privacy

Your selected file is converted on your device. You can download the new file while keeping the original unchanged.

Some formats work differently across browsers and devices. Check the converted result before using it for important work. Advertising and other optional website services may have separate privacy practices.

Format compatibility and limitations

Your archive stays on your device while you convert it. It rejects encrypted ZIP entries, links, unsafe member paths and archive types beyond its documented subset. It preserves file contents, not filesystem ownership or advanced permissions. There is a 25 MiB expanded-data safety limit and a 50-member limit. GZIP support depends on the browser.

Actual output behavior depends on the input file, your browser, device resources and the converter engine. Check important files before sharing or replacing them.

HELP & ANSWERS

TAR.GZ to TAR questions

Can it open password-protected archives?

No. Encrypted files and unsupported ZIP compression methods are rejected.

Are links and filesystem permissions preserved?

No. Only safe regular files are packaged; links and special entries are rejected.
